Q398 DRUNKARD'S PATH QUILT
This is an exceptional early quilt. The pieces are smaller than normal with the red and white fabric making a 2" square where normally a Drunkard's Path' has 4" squares. The stitching is nine stitches to the one inch, counting only the stitches on the top side of this quilt. The rows of stitching on the body of this quilt is solid quilting in rows 3/16" apart. It gives the effect of a plisse or the crinkled effect of seersucker. The quilt is very soft from use and the close stitching is phenomenal. The quilt is 68" x 70". This quilt came from Washington County Iowa. The major part of the red fabric is made from old Turkey Red dye. Approximately 1/8 of the quilt is from another dye lot and has washed to a lighter red color. The complete border of the quilt is this lighter fabric along with 8 1/2" along one side of the quilt. One corner, of this lighter fabric gores up into the quilt another rectangle 9"x 17". The quilt is all original including the binding. The border measures 5" with the binding. This red and white border is quilted in 1/2" x 3/8" parallelograms. I've looked this quilt over and it really is in good shape; when you consider it was used, and washed and it's a 1880's quilt. Great country quilt from Iowa. There is approximately 3-4 smaller age spots is the only imperfection, but nothing that detracts from this piece of handiwork.
