Q447  Sawtooth Quilt

- The pattern of this quilt is Sawtooth. This is one of the older quilt patterns and very popular before the turn of the century. However, this quilt was made between 1925 and 1930, as this bright pink was not one of the early colors chosen for quilts. This lady was an excellent quilter. Her stitches were very tiny and evenly spaced, 10 STITCHES TO THE 1". The size of this quilt is 86”X78”. The quilting of this quilt is what I would like to talk about. It is absolutely exquisite! Across the top and foot of the quilt are two rows of crazy eights. The pattern is unusual as each crazy eight is made up of five quilted parallel lines on each side and they twine across the top and foot of the quilt. The sides have this same design running down the edge only it is a single row of the five parallel lined crazy eights. Each sawtooth is quilted with a line parallel to the seam between the pink and white fabric that makes the saw tooth design. The quilting in the center of each of the large white and pink triangles is a beautiful large feathered wreath. Each corner of these large white and pink triangles has a flower with leaves. The smaller triangles are filled with lots of quilted feathering. This quilter went to a lot of work in finishing the edge of this quilt. Note the folded little triangles, that have so neatly, been stitched to the edge of this quilt. The quilt has been washed and used but has no tares or worn places. There is a small spot on one of the large white triangles made by the oil of a cottonseed. Since this is on the white fabric, it probably could be taken out with a little care. The pink fabric along the edge of the side of this quilt has been sun faded. The fading of this quilt is not very noticeable, as one does not view the edge next to the other pinks when the quilt is on a bed. One sees the outstanding quilting when one looks at this quilt laid out on a bed! - $575.
