CRK002  Victorian Oak Sideboard Buffet

This Victorian Style Oak Sideboard was acquired by the maternal grandparents of the current owner in central Wisconsin about 1900. Of quarter sawn oak, it measures 78” high, 44” wide and 21” deep. The beveled and shaped mirror, original to the piece, has been resilvered. All original brass hardware; original keyhole locks on drawers and doors, claw pattern on front legs. It has serpentine design front with curved, carved and shaped edges on base unit. Each side panel has 2” straight moldings for adornment. Intricate carvings and curved wood tastefully ornament this piece. This sideboard has the stain as originally made; only the varnish has been refinished. Purchased late 1890-1900 by a then newly wed couple to furnish their farm house; it was passed to succeeding generations and is now available for a new owner.

From the top: an applied carved 16” x 10” fleur-de-lis and fingered finial is centered between 2” wide scrolls that gracefully form rounded corners leading to a 10” deep, 1” thick sideboard wide shelf. This shelf is approximately 25” above the sideboard base unit and features curving, rolled edges. It is supported at each corner by 24” carved and shaped arms. An 8” x 10” shelf is sandwiched behind each arm and back, about 10” above sideboard base unit. These shelves reflect beautifully in the beveled mirror. The base unit has two side by side drawers, a central long drawer and two storage doors below. The top two side by side drawers measure 14” wide, 17” front to back and 5” deep. Looking at the piece, the drawer to the right has the original felt lining for flatware. The third drawer is sideboard wide, 17” front to back and 6” deep; at the lowest are two side by side doors with a 12” x 8” applied carving in the fleur-de-lis motif to match the very top. Each door covers a storage area 18” wide, 14” high, 17” front to back. A 2” wide scroll finishes the base. It is sturdy and solid construction. This sideboard has been in storage for a couple of years. It had been lovingly treated while in use and is in very good to excellent condition.
