About The Items.

Q. How old is this piece.

        A. Everything is mainly from a period 1850-1930. Occasionally we will handle some items from the 50's as is the case when we get a hold of some nice Heywood Wakefield.

Q.  What does "quarter sawn" mean?

        A. Quarter Sawn Oak (also referred to as quarter cut) is when during the milling process the log is cut into quarters and then cut in to separate boards. Doing this actually splits the medullary ray, causing the ray to appear shiny or reflective sometimes referred to as "Mirror Cut". The board cut in the normal way does produce a vertical grain that is attractive but does not have this shiny characteristic which appears in quantity only in true quarter sawn lumber. (as is evidenced in the  Cylinder Record Cabinet to the right) Appearance is not the only reason why quartered sawn is sought after. It also does not shrink or swell in width and has less twisting, warping and cup and does not surface check or split. As described, quarter sawing is more of an art than plain sawing. Quarter sawing takes larger logs to saw this product, more production time in sawing each "quarter", all of which equates to a premium price. The reason why 98% of mills do not sell quartered sawn is because of the technical skills and patience needed.
Although quarter sawing produces the most beautiful and distinct grain pattern it creates large amounts of waste lumber in the cutting process. Further, and perhaps more importantly the process requires larger logs and hence the harvesting of older growth trees and forests.

About Selling To Us.

Q. I have a china cabinet / vase / secretary / advertising sign that was left to me by my grandmother / uncle / grand dad. I was wanting to know information about it and how much it was worth.

        A. We do not do appraisals, however you are more than welcome to look through our website and use it as a reference guide. Our inventory items are priced to help give you an idea as to what your item could be worth. Remember condition is very important when comparing items. Also, the internet has endless other sources to help you in your search, as well as checking your local library for reference material.

Q. We have a piece of furniture we are interested in selling. Do you buy? What will you offer?

        A. Yes, we do buy.  That is how we get our furniture.  In order to assess our interest in your items, we would need you to provide specific information:

(1) your location (2) descriptions of each piece (3) the condition of each piece (4) the price you wish to get for it (5) also pictures are always great either through postal or E mail, especially of any makers marks or such.

Due to the vast number of email requests we get to buy, it will have to be your responsibility to determine a price.  We do not make offers on your items that you are wanting to sell. Instead we ask that you become informed, do some research if necessary and establish your own selling price. It is difficult to be the buyer as well as to be the person that is establishing a price. Again, feel free to reference our website and numerous other reference material, however we ask that as the seller you establish the price that you are needing for your merchandise.  If we can purchase it, we will.  If not, we will let you know that we are not interested.
