G427B Royal Vienna Bavaria Peasant Plate
This is a very well done and beautiful plate that depicts two scenes relating to bringing in the harvest (gleaning the fields) and giving thanks or praying over the harvest. The two different scenes are known and referred to as, 'The Gleaners' and 'The Angelus'. The center of the plate has been decorated with the scene of three women bent over with shocks of wheat or barley in their hands, and then the edge of the plate has five smaller scenes. Two scenes around the edge are the same as the large scene in the center (The Gleaners) and then the other three scenes are of a man and a woman perhaps peasants with their heads bowed praying over and giving thanks for the harvest (The Angelus). We have this same scene of the Angelus in a print. This plate has beautiful scrolling gold work
throughout. The plate is in very good all original condition with only minor wear of the gold around the very outer edge. This plate measures 9 3/4" diameter. The back of the plate is marked, 'Bavaria', with the initials of
'Z. S.& Co.' over the word Bavaria', The plate is then also marked, 'Royal Vienna' with a crown emblem below the words of 'Royal Vienna', along with the 'beehive' marking. This plate would date to the 1904 to 1912 time period. This is a beautiful plate and one might consider making a focal point in their decorating using both this plate and the print that I currently have of the Angelus and the Gleaners.
