This transitional walnut piece has original finish with bird’s-eye maple interiors. The dimensions are: 80” high, 74” wide, and 19” deep.
Burled columns, raised burl panels with incised carving, applied carvings on the crests, and burled drawers are some of the outstanding features. Additionally, the desk interior has bird’s-eye maple drawers with original pulls and many walnut dividers and cubbyholes. The original leather that was on the drop down writing surface has long since been removed. However, the original leather trim edging remains should you wish to replace it with leather that is as close to original as possible. At some point in time, the wood near the two lower hinges on the drop down needed some attention due to slight cracking from pressure put on the writing surface. It was apparently glued and appears that the extension arms were adjusted to prevent further stress in those areas.
The middle display section features beveled glass, all bird’s-eye maple interior, and one walnut shelf. The elaborate dolphin key that came with the piece when it was purchased will remain with it as it goes to its next owner.
The crests have applied carvings of leaves, vines and flowers plus applied burl strips and incised carving. The crests are easily removed for shipping or moving. The center crest has a horizontal crack along the lower piece but is hard to see because of its location and height. (see picture) We chose to leave it as is since it was glued and appears structurally sound. The crest on the right has two small leaves on the left that are gone. Most people would not even notice that they were missing due to the extreme amount of carving on that piece.
The drawers have lots of beautiful burling, heavy brass pulls and escutcheons, and picture frame molding. There is also picture frame molding surrounding the glass on the doors. One escutcheon is missing on the left door.
This Victorian piece is in excellent condition and could be a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection.
