Q007C  Red & White Friendship Quilt with History

This is an exceptional quilt that we are thrilled to be able to offer and what is special is the history that comes with this church Friendship quilt. This quilt was made by the ladies of the Christian Church in Cumberland, Iowa. The quilt was made between 1906 through 1912. It was told that the names on this quilt were sold at 10 cents each (for a fund raiser) There is 450 names on the quilt. Believed to have been started in 1906 and compiled over a period of years and to the best of those involved was completed around 1912. It was thought that the ladies of the Christian church there in Cumberland, Iowa made this quilt. This quilt was originally owned by Jenny Reed and then inherited by her daughter in law, Mrs. Ben (Beulah) Reed. This quilt has been shown in antique quilt shows and has a label on the back of the quilt that this quilt has been registered with Iowa State Historical Museum 1988. The quilt has a pinwheel design with the names being embroidered on the quilt. We have with this quilt a typed out listing of the names on this quilt, along with a personal letter from an Edith Owens of Cumberland, Iowa wrote to Beulah. In this letter she states: I have enjoyed many pleasant hours, reminiscing, and visiting with people of my generation. We have had folks from here and far away examine the quilt, and often joyfully exclaim, 'Oh, I remember these people.' The letter goes on to mention that when the ladies aid was organized in the New Christian Church one of their paying projects were Friendship Quilts. This quilt measures 76" x 92" and the quilting is approximately 8 to 9 stitches per inch. This quilt is a beautiful work of art and an excellent piece of American History. You will not want to miss adding this quilt to your own personal antique quilt collections. - $2995.
