W184B Going to Market Card Game - Advertising
This is a complete set of 52 cards that is used to play the game 'Going to the Market'. Notice that the cards advertise household items and clothing etc., that one would purchase at the 'Market'. For example, 'Ingersoll' watches, 'Libby's' foods, 'Western Electric', 'Beech-Nut', 'Knox Gelatine', Walk Over Shoes', 'Perfection' stoves, water heaters and ovens, 'Kelly - Springfield' tubes and tires, 'Pompeian' facial cream, 'Willys - Overland Company' cars, 'Postum' cereals (Post Toasties - Grape-Nuts - Post Porridge), 'Welch's', and 'Sherwin-Williams' paints. Exceptional graphics and advertising for all of these above listed companies are illustrated on these cards.
The game is complete with it's original storage box, and the instruction card. The instructions are as follows:
1. This game should be played by from three to eight players. 2. The pack consists of fifty-two illustrated cards, divided into thirteen sets of books of four cards each. Cards of the same number belong to the same set. 3. The cards should be shuffled, and an equal share dealt, one card at a time, to each player, dealing out the full deck, after which each player should arrange cards of the same set together in his hands. 4. The object of a player, holding one or more cards of a set, is to obtain the remaining cards of that set, as he wins, who during the game, lays aside the greatest number of complete sets. The storage box measures 2 3/4" x 3 3/4". Each card has a graphic scene of grandma and children heading to market with the houses all lined up in the background on the backside of each card. The box has a copyright date of 1915 on it, and it appears that 'The Sherwin-Williams Co. of Cleveland Ohio' was the originator for this game as their business is advertised on the outside of the box. Again, excellent advertising, if you collect Grape Nuts advertising notice that the popular tin advertising sign of 'To School Well Fed', with the little girl and the St. Bernard dog is illustrated on one of the cards. Don't miss this great find, I can't photograph all of the cards, for you but there is some great finds.
