W206A Veterinarian Trade Sign Horse

- This is a great wall plaque sign that depicts the racing horse 'Sansovino'. Notice that the plaque depicts in brass metal a full three dimensional horse's head and neck, all attached to a quarter sawn oak wooden board, with a decorative beveled arch across the top. Below the horse head there is a brass plaque that reads; 'Sansovino'. Sansovino was a horse that won the English Downs Derby race in 1924. The jockey riding Sansovino was Tommy Weston and the trainer was George Lambton. Epsom is on the chalk hills of the North Downs in the county of Surrey in southern England. It had been a popular resort since 1618 when Henry Wicker, a local cattle farmer, discovered the supposedly efficacious water. It is know that there has been racing on the Downs since 1661. In 1779 the 12th Earl of Derby, Edward Smioth Stanley, organized a race for fillies. The race was named after his estate, the Oaks. The following year another race was held for colts and fillies. He and his friend, Sir Charles Bunbury, agreed that this race should take one of their names. The toss of a coin decided the issue. Bunbury's horse Diomed won the race. The Derby originally was a mile long, the famous Tattenham Corner being added in 1784 when the race was extended to its present distance of one and a half miles. The race is run during the month of June. Traditionally run on a Wednesday, it has recently been switched to a Saturday.
I was told that this sign was used as a Veterinarian Trade Sign, which could have been the case, however I do know that Sansovino was a Derby winner, and this wall mount plaque was obviously made to remember this horse's accomplishments. This sign measures 16" Height, 7 1/2" Width, and the depth of the horse's head is 7". Plaque is in great all original condition.
There is an inset hanging mechanism on the backside of the plaque. There is also an impressed marking in the wood of a smiling sun design and the letters, 'W.T.&S.' Wrote in black marker there is the letters 'DA-6261'.
What a great horse plaque that every horse lover would enjoy displaying in their home or collection. This plaque is an awesome idea to honor a great horse's accomplishments. A nice tribute to the horse Sansovino. - $595.
