Wonderful original hand drawn cobalt blue decoration decorates this early salt glaze 6 Gallon stoneware Red Wing butter churn. Notice the textured exterior and the molded handles on this old salt glaze churn and the dark brown albany slip interior. Excellent original condition. Just the churn portion measures 18″ high and the base’s diameter is 10″ which is the largest part. When the dasher is in the churn the wooden handle measures 36″ high. This is an exceptional early old salt glaze churn. We were told that the design on this churn is described as a lazy 8 target and a bee sting. I believe that it was probably made by the Minnesota Stoneware Company In Red Wing, MN, in the 1880s; certainly no later than 1897 as the Red Wing stoneware companies switched to a zinc (white) glaze at that time. The lid does not appear to be original to the churn. It is more typical of the Robinson Ransbottom Pottery of Roseville, OH.
