This vintage mechanical tin lithograph wind-up “walker” by Louis Marx & Co., is Charlie McCarthy, the mischievous “child” star ventriloquist dummy, used by ventriloquist Edgar Bergen in his radio act from 1936 to 1955, and later in 1950’s TV appearances. Edgar Bergen’s real child was Candace Bergen (famous as “Murphy Brown”), who as as a young girl thought Charley was her brother!
8-1/2″ high walker; works. Charlie’s mouth opens and closes as he shuffles side-to-side. Logo for Louis Marx & Co., of New York is on his back. Shows some wear, but minimal for the age of this toy.
