This is an exceptional piece of art that depicts a French Enamel on Copper  work of a painting of Galli Marie an opera singer (Carmen) who was born in 1840. The artist and maker is Th. Soyer, the great enamel company from France. This piece is in exceptional as made condition with a fabric frame matted around the portrait and then a detailed wooden frame with attached brass plaque that reads, ‘Galli-Marie  Par Th. Soyer’. Notice that even the wooden frame has scalloped beads and criss cross lace work. The overall measurements of the frame are 17 1/2″ x 24 1/4″. The portrait which is done on a convex surface is 6 1/2″ wide by 13″ high.
Célestine Galli-Marié (November 1840 – 22 September 1905) was a French mezzo-soprano who is most famous for creating the title role in the opera Carmen. The artist, Theophile Soyer is listed as an important enamel painter who did historic subjects. He was born near Paris in the early 19th century. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1870. Enamels painted by Soyer are considered the finest quality 19th century enamels. We are thrilled to be able to offer this fine piece for sale.
