All original metal wire bird cage with a wooden trimmed base to hold the cage and raised feet to support the cage. There is several patent dates on this cage where one opens the door and the last date is 1881. Excellent detailed work on this cage which one could either sit on a table or there is chains to hang the cage to keep the birds entertained. Two wire handles with wooden bails for ease in lifting the cage. This piece measures 25 1/2″ x 16″ and stands 21 1/2″ high. What a remarkable and well constructed and entertaining cage.
We have been told that this cage is a Mockingbird cage made by Hendryx. You can tell it’s a Hendryx because the vertical bars are riveted to the cross rails instead of soldered. That’s his trademark for most brass cages. He started producing cages in 1869 as Hendryx & Bartholomew but, after a few years, he changed the name to The Andrew B. Hendryx Co. and moved from Ansonia to New Haven CT. This cage is too early to have his name on it. He didn’t start labeling cages until about 1910 or so. About the time the oval feeders were first introduced. Originally this feeder was not furnished with Oval feeders as they were not around when this bird cage was built.
