Antique cast iron Mechanical owl bank that is dated 1880 and was made by JE Stevens.
19th Century Painted Cast Iron Mechanical Bank and the Owl Turns Its Head.
This bank was made by the J. & E. Stevens Company of Cromwell, Connecticut.
The bottom of the bank is marked, with the design patent and it reads, ‘Pat’d Sept 21 & 28, 1880. The metal bank plug is dated: ‘Pat’d Feb 2, 1875’. A coin is placed at the top of the branch. The operating lever in the rear is depressed causing the owl’s head to turn counter clockwise and thereby allowing the coin to drop inside the owl itself. Coins are removed by means of a conventional round Stevens trap in the base plate.
The owl has yellow glass eyes with black pupils.
There is a hair line crack in one of the original glass eyes. This bank measures: Base 3 7/8″ x 3″ deep and the owl is 7 1/2″ high. What is exceptional about this bank is the original paint and how colorful it is. You will not want to miss adding this bank to your antique mechanical bank collection.
