This is an exceptional needlework and sewing sampler that features a cross stitch artwork sampler that is dated 1798. Note how both the lower- and upper-case letters are shown along with two different styles done with the letters in the upper-case design. By Mary Elizabeth Whitmarsh.

The sampler reads, ‘Accept Dear Parents this my slender skill. The product of your care and kind good will. I am quite young in art to cannot shew. What I in duty to your fondness owe. Then do but smile upon my weak endeavor. I’ll strive to please and be obedient ever.

To my request and ever Earnest prayer Attend O kind and gracious Lord. Inspire my heart with heavenly skill. To practice thy unerring word. Secured by that my Grateful soul. Shall ever belfs? thy Glorious name. O teach me then by thy just Laws, My future life to frame.

Note that this was created by Mary Elizabeth Whitmarsh when she was 19 years old and the year was 1798. What a beautiful hand made work of art to what appears to be a gift to her parents when Mary was 19 years of age.  The wooden frame measures 15 1/4″ wide by 17 1/2″ high and is 2 3/4″ deep.
