This is a beautiful jacquard woven coverlet dated 1839 and signed “J. HARTMAN MILTON TOWNSHIP RICHLAND COUNTY OHIO,” John Hartman, was a Mennonite weaver who immigrated to Ohio from the German States. He and his brother Peter established weaving businesses in Richland, Ashland, and Wayne Counties, Ohio. This particular coverlet is an example of his early work, dating from 1839-1857. The coverlet is a Jacquard coverlet, meaning it was woven on a loom using a system of punch cards that allowed for complex patterns. This coverlet features a “Double Rose” pattern and other motifs, including birds and flowers. The coverlet’s colors include navy blue, rose, and a natural toned background. Note the bright colors and the detailed birds and floral design on this early piece! This coverlet measures 81″ x 95″ and it was woven as two pieces and then sewn together to make this large and beautiful piece of artwork. You will not want to miss adding this significant piece of American textile history. It reflects the skill of a prominent weaver in the region and offers insights into the social and economic context of early Ohio settlements.
