Antique original oil painting by Miles Maryott that is dated ’37’ in the lower right-hand corner below his signature. This framed canvas measures to the outside of the frame 39 1/2″ wide by 21 1/2″ high and the total depth is 2″ deep. The painting is a beautiful mountain scene with a bull elk standing in shallow water with a full rack of antlers that makes for an impressive statement. Very good original condition on this painting.
Miles was a well-known painter, taxidermist, and hunting guide. In 1926, his life took an unfortunate turn when he shot and killed the sheriff of Oshkosh, Nebraska. He was tried, convicted and spent the rest of his life in the state penitentiary where he was a prolific painter. With painting being dated 1937 this painting would have been painted while Miles was incarcerated. Don’t miss adding this fine Nebraska artist to your painting collections.
