What a unique recording of the John Deere Implement dealers taking a tour and visit of the John Deere plant at Waterloo, Iowa in 1949. The booklet was put together and placed in a booklet titled, ‘My Visit To John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works – January 13, 1949′ – by Lloyd Collins’. Note that on the first page of the booklet given to the visiting John Deere dealers was a letter from the general manager Gust Olson, Jr from the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works Plant. The letter reads, ‘We want you to know that your visit is genuinely appreciated. It is a privilege for us to become better acquainted with you. This visit has been anticipated for a long time, because it is our belief that you will secure information during your stay that could not have been given you in any other way. You will see our factory. Our equipment. And our organization. You will know, through personal observation, that each John Deere tractor is manufacture with the greatest precision and care. Information of this character will be helpful both to you and to the Deere organization generally in those days ahead when competition again becomes keen, and perhaps ruthless. Our good wishes for success go with you and remember– our latch string is always out. Signed, Gust Olson, General Manager.
What a wonderful welcome casting a personal touch to each one attending and yet casting a vision for the John Deere company and the pride they took in making their product.
Note that the booklet has several photographs capturing this event and those that attended. There is a picture of the dealers from the Omaha Territory that were in attendance at this event on January 13, 1949, along with a page that lists the names, city and dealership names. There is an arial view of the Waterloo, Iowa plant. A photo of the John Deere ‘R’ Diesel tractor. And there is a photo for the ‘AR tractor, that the plant was working on. There is a wealth of information regarding John Deere and the John Deere ‘R’ tractor. Also, included is the Souvenir Menu for the John Deere Dinner that was served for the Dealer’s Meeting. What an exceptional piece of John Deere literature and information for those dealers that were in attendance that day for this informative event. The booklet measures 9″ x 11 1/2″.

This came from the estate of the artist Clayton Bailey of Port Costa, California.
