John Rogers antique statue that depicts Rip Van Winkle – Returned – is the title to this sculpture. This plaster sculpture, is based on the popular Washington Irving story published in 1819, depicting Rip returning as an old man from his twenty-year sleep in the Catskills. The sculptor, John Rogers, secured a middle-class audience through the maxim of large sales and small profits, producing some eighty thousand plasters during his career. In Rip Van Winkle Returned, Rogers displays his mastery of realistic subjects, skillfully detailing the wrinkles in Rip’s tattered coat and trousers, his flowing beard, his confused expression, and his aged dog. This statue measures 21″ high and the base is 9 1/2″ diameter. Again, the statue is titled and signed, ‘John Rogers – New York’ also on the backside the statue is marked, ‘Patented July 25, 1871’. The original finish and patina on this Rogers are by far the best original condition that we have ever been able to offer.
