Wow what a fine Vase! This is a beautiful Royal Vienna Vase with blue marked Beehive emblem. This Vienna Porcelain, Hand Painted Portrait vase is marked by the Artist and is Signed Wagner. This vase measures 9 1/2″ high and is x 3 3/4″ diameter at the widest point. The portrait is that of Mrs. Ellenborough and is marked on the bottom of the vase as being her. This pale Blue Luster background colored vase with Exceptional Gold Enamel Floral and Garland Highlights is a remarkable piece of porcelain.
Jane Digby, who later became Lady Ellenborough, is the featured woman and she was one of the most famous adventuresses of her times, even having an affair with King Otto of Greece, and his father, and then going off to live in a cave with the Greek General Chatzipetros.
Her exploits were so daring for the age that they almost defy belief even today, to the point that reading any recounting of her life sounds like fiction. Born in 1807 in Dorset, England to an admiral whose booty from his October 1799 raid on the Spanish galleon Santa Brigida formed the basis of the family’s wealth, she was perhaps made for the adventuring life.
