This is an exceptional companion pair of German artist signed prints. La Madonna di San Sisto signed prints. The artist signature is
Franz Hanfstaengl (1804 – 1877) was a German lithographer and photographer. He worked in Munich as a portrait lithographer and photographer, producing prints of many of the notable figures of his time. His classically trained techniques employed many of the painterly traditions with regard to poses, drapery, composition and lighting.
This companion set of prints came from a prominent family in the St. Joseph, Missouri area, their last name was Krug. The prints are titled, however I do not read German. Both prints are signed, ‘Printed in Munich’, and also both prints are impressed in the lower right hand corner, ‘Franz Hanfstaengl Munchen’. The prints appear to follow a sequence and one of the prints is marked as being No. 1, and the second one is marked, No. 2. Wonderful details in the prints, and the subject matter of mother and child is very touching. Notice that in the first print there is winged cupids in the lower center portion of the print. Each print is in a matching frame and the frames measure 9 1/4″ x 11 1/4″. All original and very nice condition.
Note on the back of these two prints there is an art store label that reads, ‘St. Joseph Art Store 82 Francis St. St. Joseph, MO.’
